چکیده

In this paper we discuss numerical simulation techniques using a finite element approach in combination with the fictitious boundary method (FBM) for rigid particulate flow configurations in 3D. The flow is computed with a multigrid finite element solver (FEATFLOW), the solid particles are allowed to move freely through the computational mesh which can be static or adaptively aligned by a dynamic grid deformation method allowing structured as well as unstructured meshes. We explain the details of how we can use the fictitious boundary method to simulate flows with complex geometries, that are hard to describe analytically. Stationary and time-dependent numerical examples, demonstrating the use of such geometries are provided. Our numerical results include well-known benchmark configurations showing that the method can accurately and efficiently handle prototypical particulate flow situations in 3D with particles of different shape and size.

Direct Numerical Simulation of Particulate Flow via Multigrid FEM Techniques and the Fictitious Boundary Method

Direct numerical simulation techniques for particulate flow by the fictitious boundary method (FBM) are presented. The flow is computed by a multigrid finite element solver and the solid particles are allowed to move freely through the computational mesh which can be chosen independently from the particles of arbitrary shape, size and number. The interaction between the fluid and the particles ...

This contribution presents new numerical simulation techniques using a Finite Element approach coupled with the Fictitious Boundary Method (FEM-FBM) for non-stationary multiphase flow configurations in 3D. The fluid solution is computed by a Finite Element multigrid solver, which has been realized in the open source CFD package FEATFLOW, while complex dynamic or static geometrical features of t...

Fictitious boundary and moving mesh methods for the numerical simulation of rigid particulate flows

In this paper, we investigate the numerical simulation of rigid particulate flows using a new moving mesh method combined with the multigrid fictitious boundary method (FBM) [9, 10]. With this approach, the mesh is dynamically relocated through a special partial differential equation to capture the region near the surface of the moving particles with high accuracy. The complete system is realiz...

Augmented Stabilized Formulations with Fictitious Boundary Methods

Augmentation of the SUPS formulation was introduced earlier and successfully applied to solving incompressible NavierStokes equations for both two dimensional and three dimensional problems. Fictitious boundary methods (FBM) is a new methodology that aid the study of flow descriptions around solid obstacles on fixed Cartesian product grids that do not require body confirming meshes. FBM has bee...
